Figures, released this week, revealed a new daily rental record of 6,280 journeys was reached during the month of July.

The busiest day so far in the history of the scheme was Wednesday July 13, for the scheme which now has more than 58,000 subscribers and 2.2 million rentals have been taken since it launched in September 2009.

London’s scheme, by comparison, has been running for just over a year and as of more than 6M journeys have been on it.

However the Irish scheme can genuinely claim to be more successful as the scheme was only launched with 450 bikes, with plans to bring it up to 5,000.

London’s scheme, which is backed by the financial muscle of Barclays Bank, currently uses around 6,000 bikes.

Dublin’s lord mayor, Andrew Montague, originally proposed the scheme, he said: “dublinbikes continues to go from success to success.

“There are now 550 bikes in the scheme operating from 44 stations, this means each bike was used almost 11.5 times on July 13 which is absolutely wonderful to see.

“It also shows once again the demand for the scheme and expanding it is something I will prioritise.”
