The Institute of Water (IoW) Northern Ireland Area autumn seminar, ‘Water Water Everywhere, learning to live with it’ will take place on 7 October at the Tower Hotel, Derry.

Dr Trevor Elliot, reader in environmental engineering at Queen’s University Belfast, will deliver the keynote address before industry experts consider a number of key questions about the future of water resources in Northern Ireland. Specific challenges that will be addressed include how Northern Ireland can plan for future shortages, and whether existing plans work in a changing social, economic and leisure environment.

Introduced by Northern Ireland Water (NIW) director of asset management and IoW president, George Butler, the one-day event will be divided into three overarching topics: ‘Understanding the Water Environment’, ‘Managing the Water Environment’ and ‘Sustaining the Water Environment’.

Speakers in the first section include Sue Christie from Northern Ireland Environmental Link and Tidy Northern Ireland ceo Dr Ian Humphreys, who will question whether enough is being done to protect the water environment. David Porter from the Rivers Agency (DARD) and Claire Cockerill from the Freshwater Task Force, will then examine how the water environment is managed,

Finally, Northern Ireland Water (NIW) head of asset strategy, Paddy Brow and head of networks sewage, Des Nevin, will look at strategies in place for the future, while Waterwise managing director Jacob Tompkins will consider the role of the consumer and customer.

IoW chief executive Lynn Cooper said: “We are delighted to have attracted such a high calibre of speakers to address the sustainability of Northern Ireland’s water and look forward to an interesting and thought provoking seminar.”

The cost for delegates is £50 for IoW members and £75 for non-members. For more information click here.
