The plant, which the firm said today (September 26) would get the green light, features two Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) processing trains with a combined capacity 8.9m tonnes per year and a domestic gas plant.

The plant, which will be called The Wheatstone project, is due to process its first gas by 2016.

Located at Ashburton North 12km west of Onslow in Western Australia’s Pilbara region could become one of Australia’s largest resource projects, according to Chevron Corporation.

Chevron Corporation chairman and chief executive officer, John Watson, said: “The Wheatstone Project is a legacy, value-creating investment that will provide Chevron with significant reserves and production growth.

“This project, along with Gorgon LNG, is well-positioned to provide a large, secure energy supply to meet growing demand in the Asia-Pacific region, and to place Chevron as one of the world’s leading LNG suppliers.”
