As part of the contract, Dorest-based ESS will be required to process 80,000 tonnes of waste wood from the county’s network of household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) at a new site in Southampton.

Waste wood from Hampshire’s HWRCs, as well as other sources, will be transported to a purpose-built one acre site at the Port of Southampton for processing, where ESS will be working in partnership with shipping carrier Solent Stevedores.

60,000 tonnes of the recycled waste wood will then be shipped to Sweden to fuel power stations. The remaining 20,000 tonnes of ‘clean’ wood will be used for animal bedding and as fuel for biomass plants in the UK.

According to ESS, four new jobs have been created with the opening of the new site which operates 20 hours a day.

ESS commercial manager Peter Hardy, said: “This is a significant expansion for Eco. It builds on the success of our existing partnership with Solent Stevedores which has seen thousands of tonnes of waste wood diverted from landfill into more productive use, such as fuel and animal bedding.”
