Incinerator bottom ash recovery plant gets green light

The incinerator bottom ash aggregate (IBAA) facility will be built by Covanta Energy to process the by-product from a 95MW energy recovery plant that will be constructed by the company on the same site at Ince Park, Cheshire.

The IBAA facility will have the capacity to process up to 250,000 tonnes of ash every year. Covanta’s preferred partner for the project is Ballast Phoenix, which currently operates on seven UK sites and processes more than 650,000 tonnes of IBA per year.

Covanta’s managing director Malcolm Chilton said: “We are delighted that we have received planning permission from the council to build this facility. This ensures the bottom ash will be recycled and not sent to landfill.

“Furthermore as the IBAA facility will be located within Ince Park alongside our energy-from-waste facility, transportation will be kept to a minimum helping to provide an even more sustainable solution.”

Ince Park is a joint venture project between Covanta and Peel Environmental to deliver UK’s largest Eco Park. The concept behind the Ince Park development is to increase waste recycling, reprocessing and energy recovery to create a centre for excellence for the emerging resource economy.
