Luxury hotel launches new biomass plant

A four-star Welsh hotel has installed a £0.5m biomass plant on site in a bid to generate its own biomass fuel and cut its energy bills.

The new 600Kw renewable energy system at the Tre-Ysgawen Hall Country House Hotel and Spa in Anglesey, which was switched on earlier this week (April 10), aims to reduce the hotel’s £200,000 a year energy bills by nearly 50%.

It is anticipated the new boiler will completely cancel out the hotel’s £90,000 a year oil bill, as well as provide around 80 jobs.

Attending the launch was Welsh government minister for business, enterprise, technology and science Edwina Hart, who said: “This investment will secure the long term sustainable future of the hotel, ensure it remains highly competitive and also safeguard jobs”.

The biomass boiler will cost the hotel £40,000 a year to run, but is expected to benefit from the Government’s renewable heat incentive (RHI).

Andrew Fletcher, managing director of Carbon Control, which oversaw the project, said that he hopes the initiative “will give other businesses a means of reassurance so they can look at investing in this type of greener technology with confidence”.
