A study by waste-to-energy specialist CHO Power claims that the UK needs to house 107 of these treatment facilities, which would represent over 16% of the renewable electricity market across Europe.
Across Europe 650 gasification plants need to be built within the same timeframe, the report argues, which would amount to around 6,500 MWe in total.
But it is in the UK that strong growth is predicted for this sector, which is increasingly being viewed as an attractive market for the generation of electricity from waste and biomass since the Government issued clarity over renewables obligation support for gasification technology.
The UK will soon be home to the world’s largest advanced gasification plant, which is being built in Teeside by US-based firm Air Products.
The 50MW facility will divert up to 350,000 metric tonnes of residual waste from landfill per annum, generating enough electricity to power up to 50,000 homes.
