Rotherham based Whitby’s fish and chip restaurant, which employs 65 members of staff, is using a BP 11 bin press from industrial packaging materials and environmental management supplier Agritel.

Purchase in August 2012, the press is used to crush rubbish bags in the 1100 litre bins containing the restaurant’s day-to-day waste.

According to Whitby’s, manager Darren Richards, the restaurant’s rapid rise in popularity meant that it was quickly filling 13 conventional bins with rubbish every week.

The restaurant is charged for the number of bins emptied, and the weight per kilo of each bin.

Therefore, decreasing the number of collections to three bins for general rubbish and two bins for recycled paper materials twice a week has reduced its waste disposal costs substantially.

In addition, the amount of staff time allocated to overseeing the process and the amount of diesel used by the trucks making the collections have also been reduced.

The restaurant claims the savings will allow it to pay for the bin press out right in just over a year and says it will look to purchase another one when Whitby’s opens up its new Doncaster restaurant this month.

The bin press has a compaction ratio of three to one and according to Agritel MD John Duffus, they are suitable at any business location where 1100 litre bins are regularly filled with disposable rubbish and recyclable paper waste.
