Irish Government to spend €13m on community energy projects

The Irish Government will spend €13m (£10.8m) on more than 80 community energy projects by the end of the year, Minister for Communications Energy and Natural Resources Pat Rabbitte announced today.

The projects, under the Better Energy schemes administered by Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland SEAI, include energy efficiency upgrades to over 3,500 homes, 80% of which are classed as energy poor, and more than 290 public and community buildings.

Delivering the projects will involve the equivalent of more than 300 full time jobs and will achieve almost €7m annual energy savings.

Rabbitte said: “The €13m funding announced today is focused on similar initiatives at community level supporting practical energy efficiency upgrades, making the properties warmer, more comfortable, and less costly to run.

“We see this as a key component of the future for retrofitting in Ireland,” he added.
