EXCLUSIVE: Advancing consumer behaviour will lead us to a sustainable economy

Innovation in renewable energy and 'advancing consumer behaviour change' both have the potential to revolutionise the global economy, says SC Johnson's chief sustainability officer Kelly M. Semrau.

With energy costs continuing to rise, businesses are looking for ways to better manage their energy consumption and minimise dependence on fossil fuels.

Semrau said: “With corresponding energy cost savings, these types of renewable energy are no longer just must-haves but they’re also a smart way to do business.

“As a global company, we believe we have a responsibility to help advance innovation in this space,” she added.

In addition to incorporating sustainable energy solutions, Semrau said industry has another role to play with driving a change in consumer behaviour if it wants to achieve a sustainable economy.

“We’ve got to do our part to help advance consumer behaviour change. It’s going to take all stakeholders – from businesses, to government, to society as a whole, to take action if we’re going to make real progress,” she added.

Pursuing this side of sustainable development, SC Johnson is learning through the commission of a five-year research initiative called the SC Johnson Sustainable Behavior Change Program.

With partners from Arizona State University and the University of Minnesota, the company is working to understand more about how to “inspire consumer behaviour change” around sustainable choices.
