The deal, which will see all 10 rounds of the 2014/2015 FIA Formula E Championship televised live and free-to-air in the UK through ITV, adds to existing agreements with FOX Sports and Japan’s TV Asahi.
Formula E chief marketing officer Ali Russell said: “The UK is widely considered the home of motorsport and a very important market for Formula E. As such, with its unrivalled commitment to motorsport, ITV provides the perfect platform to showcase our new fully-electric series – which will also be racing in London in June 2015 – and to appeal to a new generation of motorsport fans.”
The inaugural season commences in September 2014 through to June 2015, with teams competing in 10 cities around the world.
On the FIA’s Formula E website it states that the new racing series “represents a vision for the future of the motor industry over the coming decades, serving as a framework for R&D around the electric vehicle, accelerating general interest in these cars and promoting sustainability”.
In December 2013, film star and environmental activist Leonardo Dicaprio teamed up with Venturi Automobiles to complete the 10 team line-up of this year’s racing championship.
