‘One-stop-shop’ solutions for waste and recycling sector

Edwin White, Managing Director, John White and Son (Weighing Machines) Ltd, based in Fife, outlines the range of 'one-stop-shop' solutions his long-established company can offer to waste and recycling customers

John White & Son has provided weighing solutions in response to customers’ needs since 1715. The company takes the weight off customers’ shoulders by offering solutions that comply with relevant legislation. As one of the leading suppliers of mobile or “on-board” weighing systems, John White & Son has many years’ experience offering a wide range of “legal-for-trade” equipment, including on-board systems for all vehicle types, weighbridges, data collection and management, bespoke systems, platform scales and general weighing products.

The on-board range consists of a versatile weighing terminal linked to measuring systems that have been specially designed for each type of vehicle. On the Skip Weigher loadcell assemblies are mounted at the end of each lifting arm, allowing the weight to be established as soon as the skip has been lifted clear of the ground. Connection with the terminal in the cab is by radio link, eliminating the problems associated with cabled connections.

A similar system is employed on the Crane Scale, which is used for bottle banks and other types of container. The operator controls the system from the rear of the lorry, including taring and weight recording. A heavy-duty version measures loads up to 100 tonnes.

Weighing for hook-lifts

The Hook-Lift Weigher for demountables is designed to protect the loadcells during loading/ unloading and in transit. Once the container is on the vehicle, hydraulic rams lift it clear of the chassis and retract once the weight is recorded. The full on-board system for rigid vehicles employs heavy-duty loadcell assemblies and automatically compensates for level. A Shovel Loader system allows vehicles to be loaded to a precise weight without the need for a weighbridge, and a Belt Weigher is available for static or mobile crushers and conveyor systems.

All systems record the weight and other relevant data stored within the weighing terminal, including details of customers, locations, materials, etc, all of which is printed on the weight ticket. This data can also be downloaded to a computer system via Memo-Box, or transmitted to the office by cable, radio or GSM. Special software programs enable the user to perform detailed analysis and compile reports.
Weighbridges are an essential part of most waste and recycling operations and today’s models are now even more sophisticated. The company’s range of pit and surface-mounted weighbridges can be supplied with data collection and management systems, providing tight control of material movements at landfill sites, transfer stations, multi-material and recycling operations. Un-manned systems which allow access to authorised users by means of ID tagging help reduce operating costs and enable sites to remain open.

The company’s expertise, coupled with its extensive range of products, make it an ideal “one-stop-shop” for accurate, approved weighing systems demanded by the waste and recycling industries.
