FM sector invited to Sustainability School

Facilities management (FM) and services suppliers will get a free resource to help them boost their sustainability credentials next week, thanks to the Supply Chain Sustainability School.

Participating companies will be able to access e-learning modules and track their progress, get involved in supplier development days and participate in groups focusing on wider issues such as construction, infrastructure and research.

Chair of the School’s new FM group and Carillion chief sustainability officer David Picton said: “Challenges are particularly intense in the complex and pressurized context of the FM and Services supply chain, so the School’s free resources and dynamic knowledge development will be ‘business critical’ in supporting suppliers to meet exacting requirements of clients, users, wider stakeholders and the communities they serve.”

Back to school

Launched in 2012 to support the construction sector, the School now has over 7,000 UK members including nine of the 10 largest construction firms. The expansion into the £117bn FM sector was partially funded by a £285k investment from the Government’s UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES).

FM and its supply chain face diverse sustainability challenges, including treatment of workers in complex supply chains, the provenance of food, materials and uniforms, and securing energy and carbon reduction targets within tightly constrained budgets for asset maintenance and improvement

School chair Shaun McCarthy added: “The Supply Chain School has already delivered an immense step forward for sustainability in the construction sector. Now we want to help consolidate this by supporting FM, which plays such a central role in the sustainable management of assets throughout their lifetime.”
