The countdown to kick-off is almost over as millions of die-hard fans across the country eagerly await the return of what promises to be another fascinating year of tension and drama following a brief hiatus.

There are countless reasons to get excited about the return of top-level football to our screens, and none more so than the welcome trend of sustainability emerging within The Beautiful Game.

At the start of this month, Newcastle United continued its ‘carbon positive’ crusade by installing a combined heat and power (CHP) system at its St James Park Stadium. That news came just a week after Bristol Football Club, which is also playing in the Championship this coming season, unveiled a new solar PV project at its Ashton Gate stadium as part of an ongoing partnership between the City Council and the stadium’s owner, Bristol Sport.

These developments represent just a couple of examples of a move towards environmental goal-scoring within the footballing sphere.
