New concept vehicle works for Yorwaste

Yorwaste is the first company in the country to buy a new form of articulated dump truck, which is stated to be not only more fuel efficient but also safer than its predecessors.

The 24-tonne M8 truck, designed and manufactured by Thirsk-based Multidrive, is unique because, unlike conventional dump trucks, it does not have to be tipped up to discharge its load. Instead, a conveyor belt running along the base of the truck empties the load. This method is claimed to offer better fuel-efficiency, because, as no hydraulics are needed to tip the truck, it is much lighter than other vehicles.

Yorwaste is now using the M8 at its integrated waste management site at Harewood Whin, where it carries compost, aggregates and residual waste that cannot be recycled.

Yorwaste Head of Operations, Kevin Quigley, said: “The M8 represents a significant cost saving because it can carry three different types of waste product at either high or low volumes and weights.

“We previously had to hire vehicles to carry out this work and because the M8 doesn’t need to be tipped to discharge its load, it is also a lot safer to use.”

Dave Tetchner, Project Manager at Multidrive, said that, until now, the M8 had only been sold to companies working in the mining industries in South Africa.

“We are looking to establish home markets for the M8 and as a company based in North Yorkshire we are pleased that our first customer is another local firm, particularly one with as good a reputation as Yorwaste.”
