Monitoring for efficiency

The Water, Wastewater and Environment Monitoring Exhibition and Conference takes place next month. What can visitors expect to see?

Contractors within the water industry as well as the water utilities themselves are increasingly coming under pressure to resolve the leakage problem, while connecting a growing population into an already stretched network. Then there is the water shortage to contend with.

This all has to be done within the water companies’ framework agreements negotiated by the water regulator OFWAT.

The Water, Wastewater and Environment Monitoring (WWEM) conference and exhibition takes place on November 1-2 at the Telford International Centre, Telford. More than 100 exhibitors will be on hand to help contractors and the water companies assess the very latest class-leading products, systems and services to maximise the efficiency and agility of their operations.

The EA has appointed global instrumentation and measurement solutions company Sira as the certification body to operate the MCERTS schemes on its behalf. MCERTS for the self-monitoring of effluent flow launched a little over a year ago and Sira staff will be available to answer questions about any aspect of this important topic.

MCERT will also be the main feature of Siemens’ stand – it will display the HydroRanger 200, an open channel flow monitor that meets the stringent test requirements of MCERTS.

Meanwhile, Seko will highlight a wide variety of its products ranging from chemical dispensers for dishwashing machines, laundry machines, spray machines, chemical dilution and proportioning dispensers.

As the toxic effects of Mercury are becoming increasingly realised then permissible limits are dropping all the time. Mercury analysis in water, air and solids will be the main focal point of Pelican’s stand.

Lambda Advanced Technology on the other hand will be showing a host of analysis products including the new multi EA3100 elemental analyser and the Contra AA 300 and Contra AA 7000 atomic absorption spectrometers from Analytik Jena. The EA3100 has been developed for the determination of carbon, nitrogen, sulphur and total chlorine in the most varied of sample matrices.

Metrohm UK is launching its Applikon Agency, offering online analysis bridging the gap between the Process and the Lab. There will also be debuts for Metrohm’s laboratory automated potentiometer titrators, ion chromatography and voltammetry trace analysers.

Bufferless residual chlorine/chlorine dioxide analysers are increasingly being used by water companies to monitor final residual levels in water. Alldos will have an array of its analysers on show such as the Compact System which uses a Conex Multi amplifier and controller.

Pulsar Process Measurement will be bringing its dBMACH3 transducer to WWEM which is designed for extremely high accuracy open channel flow measurement. It features a 125kHz operating frequency. Ultrasonic accuracy is a function of the distance over which the measurement is being made, and the dBMACH3 can measure right up to its 75mm nose cone.

YSI Hydrodata’s stand is featuring the latest technologies for water quality, level and flow data collection. YSI has launched three new Profilers – buoy-mounted, pontoon-mounted or fixed-site. Each of these can take measurements at user-defined intervals throughout a water column up to a maximum depth of 100m, recording at minimum intervals of 0.5m.

Hach Lange will display the latest technology for testing and monitoring water and wastewater in any application. The company will feature online, laboratory and portable equipment, while experts will be on hand to give advice on the appropriate monitoring solution for every need.

ABB is using WWEM to debut its CalMaster2 flow meter verification system, the first in-situ portable verification system for both battery and mains-powered electromagnetic flow meters.

The PDV6000, a small portable monitor that analyses both water and soil samples for a selection of metals, and OVA5000 online monitoring, with application areas including contaminating metals in potable water treatment, effluent treatment control and monitoring in the metals industry will feature on MTI’s stand.

Visitors to Mettler-Toledo’s stand will see its Seven series of benchtop and portable meters covering a wide variety of application needs and demands. Three ranges are available – the SevenEasy, SevenMulti and SevenGo.

A range of consumables for chromatography including accessories from Restek Corporation with particular reference to Analytical Reference Materials used for water analysis and environmental monitoring will be the centrepiece of Thames Restek’s stand. The company will also highlight the Parker Balston range of analytical gas generators.

In an age of rapidly escalating energy costs and environmental concerns, efficient control of water and wastewater applications is critical. Danfoss has developed the VLT AQUA Drive, dedicated to constant and variable torque applications within the water industry, such as pumps, blowers, travelling bridges, PD pumps and centrifuges. The compact AQUA Drive has an operating efficiency in excess of 98%.

RS Aqua is highlighting several new and recently launched products including the Seaguard underwater control and logging host platform from AADI, Norway.

WWEM is again being supported by the Environment Agency and CIWEM with SWIG organising the conference sessions, which will cover topics including the Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations as well as MCERTS for Self Monitoring Effluent Flow, Continuous Water Monitoring Equipment and Operator Monitoring Assessment.
