Greenwich gets a green lift

Greenwich Council is using Ecoprocess' Isbjörn electrically-operated split bin lift for its pilot green waste collection scheme, serving around 6,000 properties in the borough each week.

Because the lift is powered by the collection vehicle’s battery, as opposed to the engine, the crews have noticed that fuel consumption has reduced by between 12% to 15%, reducing the cost and environmental impact of the rounds. As well as reduced emissions, the process of emptying bins is also quieter, preventing disturbance of residents early in the morning.

Another benefit which appealed to Greenwich Council, when specifying the Ecoprocess Isbjörn lift, was the health and safety features. Individual controls and emergency stop buttons are included on both sides of the lift and the operating zone is marked out by padded safety barriers.

If the bins exceed safe weight limits, or encounter any kind of obstacle, the lifts are stopped automatically.
