Silotank delivers record order

Silotank has recently completed its largest ever export order. It delivered 18 vessels to Norway, one of which measured 10m long and 7.5m high. And, following completion of the complex operation, it is looking to broaden its horizons.

Silotank, A designer, manufacturer and installer of custom-built GRP and Thermoplastic tanks and process vessels, has completed and delivered its largest ever export order: 18 tanks to Norway.

In the past 13 months, the company has completed export orders of more than £1.1M to the German and Norwegian markets.

Located in Belfast, Silotank is export focused, and supplies tanks to Kazakhstan, Nigeria, South America (Atacama Desert), Korea, Finland, Germany and Norway.

The Norwegian contract was won against European competition, and was completed ahead of schedule. Each of the process vessels was designed for earthquake and the loads that would be imposed for winter sea conditions in the North Sea.

The process vessels varied in complexity with the largest vessel measuring 10m long, 6m wide and 7.5m high.

The design of this tank involved the use of finite element analysis to understand the stresses and strains during operation.

Ten of the 18 tanks were designed, manufactured and inspected to BS4994-1987 Category 1, with client-specific documentation requirements that exceeded the requirements of Category 1.

The tanks where shipped in two consignments from Silotank’s factory in west Belfast to Belfast docks. The company chartered two ships that sailed to Kristiansand, south Norway, to the customer’s site where they where offloaded quayside.

Silotank also helped the client by sending personnel to meet each charter ship arriving and assisted with the installation of the tanks.

Tanks ranged in diameter from 2.2m to 4.5m, so wide loads were considered when shipping to the docks. Special shipping cradles were manufactured in GRP and each tank was secured to these before shipping.

Detailed lifting, handling and installation instructions were sent to the customer before each shipped. And an installation engineer meet each shipment and provided assistance to the client to ensure that tanks where not damaged during the transport and installation process.

With the close proximity of the Silotank factory to Belfast docks and availability of charter ships and RoRo service, Silotank is considering the shipping of tanks and vessels worldwide.

The presence of sales personnel in Holland and Germany is allowing Silotank to penetrate the chemical-processing industries in these countries.
