Windfall for contractors

Contractors look set to benefit from a multimillion windfall at Yorkshire Water, which plans to spend £400M between now and next April as it enters the second phase of its five-year £1.9B capital investment programme to improve its water and sewer network.

Work planned over the coming months includes £5M to upgrade Chellow Heights and Graincliffe Water Treatment Works to improve drinking water quality in Bradford. About £70M has been earmarked to upgrade Blackburn Meadows sewage works in Sheffield as part of the Freshwater Fish Directive to improve water quality in the River Don, boosting fish stocks and putting the river back at the heart of local communities.

Meanwhile, Clancy Doc-wra is to carry out all the repair and maintenance work for South East Water (SEW) having signed up to a partnership that could be worth up to £500M over the next ten years. The contract – the single, largest ever awarded by SEW – will see also see Clancy Docwra lay all the water company’s strategic water mains, and install 375,000 meters at customers’ homes.

The contract has been awarded up until 2016, with the option for both parties to agree undertaking this work for a further five-year period until 2021.

Paul Butler, SEW managing director, said: “We are delighted to have joined in partnership with Clancy Docwra, who will deliver key elements of our operational work, as well as a substantial part of our capital programme.

“Our staff will be working alongside them to help ensure this work is delivered safely, efficiently and with excellent customer service at its core.”

Galliford Try, as part of its GBM joint venture with MWH Treatment and Mott MacDonald, has been awarded a suite of contracts worth £80M under its current AMP5 framework contract with Thames Water.

The largest of the schemes, worth £28m, involves the development of sludge treatment and storage facilities at three wastewater treatment works at Camberley, Chertsey and Crawley so that they comply with the Nitrate Vulnerable Zone regulations.
