CIWM WAC initiative makes progress

The CIWM Waste Awareness Certificate has been designed for employees who have responsibilities for dealing with waste in companies, organisations, and authorities that produce waste as part of a manufacturing, retail or service process.

The course has proved a success since its launch at the CIWM Conference and Exhibition last year. There are currently 29 registered training centres in the UK and the number is increasing quickly says CIWM which reports that, on average, 25 people a week take the WAC course.

The aims of the course are to provide an introduction to waste management and to provide the knowledge, skills and understanding to improve the management of waste.
The course describes why it is necessary to deal with waste properly and explains what the true cost of waste includes. It considers the various types of waste and sets out the waste hierarchy which is central to any strategy for dealing with waste.

The course moves on to considering ways in which waste can be reduced, re-used, recycled, or recovered and how to manage what waste remains. An introduction is given to Waste Auditing in order to develop a systematic and measured approach to the management of wastes.

The next sections of the course deal with the safety and environmental aspects of waste management and also the legal obligations such as “Duty of Care”, various regulations, and the role of the regulators. The penalties for failing to deal with waste properly are set out.

Finally, sources of help and assistance are identified.
The course is concluded with a short, open-book, multi-choice assessment test. Candidates who pass the test are awarded a certificate from the Chartered Institution. Those who do not sit the test or who fail to reach the required standard are awarded a certificate of attendance.

Training is carried out by Approved Trainers attached to Registered raining Centres all under the quality control of the Chartered Institution.

CIWM lists a wide range of organisations who have attended the course, including BAWE Systems, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, the Corporation of London, MacDonalds, Groundwork, Bedfordshire County Council, Torbay Borough Council and HMP Wellingborough.
