4D consortium to deliver Southern’s water and wastewater schemes

A consortium of United Utilities, Costain and MWH will be delivering a substantial proportion Southern Water's water quality and environmental improvement programme for the next five years.

Under the name 4D, the consortium has won the £750 million contract covering more than 250 water and wastewater schemes as part of Southern’s £1.8 billion capital investment programme.

Graham Keegan, chief operating officer of 4D said: “As a consortium, united Utilities, Costain and MWH bring together a wealth of experience and knowledge from within the utility sector. We look forward to working in partnership with Southern Water over the next five years to deliver major water quality and environmental improvements.”

The work includes upgrading water and wastewater treatment assets across parts of Hampshire, West and East Sussex, Kent and the Isle of Wight, together with implementing sludge treatment processes and some infrastructure improvements.

The contract, which begins immediately, involves delivery of schemes such as:

  • a £65 million scheme to improve the quality of wastewater released from treatment works serving Portsmouth and Havant;
  • a £13 million scheme to safeguard the water supply in the Hastings area;
  • an £18 million scheme to improve water quality in Tunbridge Wells; and
  • a £23 million scheme to bring mains drainage to New Romney and Greatstone for the first time.

    Within 4D, United Utilities and Costain are major partners, owning 40% each, with 20% for MWH.
