London and Stockholm team up to tackle climate change

The English and Swedish capitals are to collaborate on efforts to curb climate change by sharing information on the things that have worked for them.

London’s deputy mayor, Nicky Gavron, met with her Stockholm counterpart Ulla Hamilton this week to agree a programme of co-operation and sharing expertise.

Both cities are already world leaders in promoting an environmentally friendly urban environment and have each introduced a number of innovative initiatives to deliver what they promise.

The collaboration is likely to focus on sustainable construction and the integration of renewable energy in new developments.

London and Stockholm have both ploughed considerable resources into these areas and now each looks set to benefit from the other’s knowledge.

Deputy Mayor Nicky Gavron said: “Stockholm is one of the world’s leading cities on creating the low carbon, urban environmental infrastructure for the twenty-first century for energy, water and waste,” said Ms Gavron.

“I have seen for myself what they have achieved in their pioneering sustainable neighbourhood of Hammarby. So London and Stockholm can learn a lot from each other. This is an important partnership for both cities.”

Ulla Hamilton added: “I am pleased to be in London and working with the Mayor and deputy mayor on how we can tackle climate change together.

“Stockholm has a lot to learn from London as so many of Sweden’s companies and businesses are world famous for environmental innovations.

“We need to seize all the opportunities we can to work together and share our expertise.”
