The Westport Woods Hotel & Spa was given a Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) Coordinated Energy Management Programme award for its environmental programme.

According to the Mayo Advertiser, the hotel has put in place schemes over the last five years to reduce emissions and become more energy efficient.

These included a plan to reduce waste sent to landfill and the installation of solar panels and a wood pellet burner.

General manager Michael Lennon is reported to have said: “We have all put a lot of work into greening the hotel and making it as energy efficient as possible.

“It is very rewarding to receive official acknowledgement of our efforts from the SEI.”

Minister for Communications, Energy, and Natural Resources Eamon Ryan was the guest of honour at the event and presented the awards.

Recently, the Government revealed plans to try to encourage more businesses in the country to recycle a greater proportion of packaging materials.
