Specialist monitoring at several beaches along the River Solway in Scotland has detected no radioactive particles from the Sellafield nuclear plant, Scottish authorities announced.
The monitoring, completed shortly before Christmas, was carried out by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), the Environment Agency, Sellafield Limited and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
Ian Robertson from SEPA said monitoring in that area would now be suspended.
He added: “This will be kept under review and will be based on the results of ongoing monitoring that Sellafield Limited will be carrying out on west Cumbrian beaches throughout 2008.”
Sellafield Limited is expected to release the results of monitoring of sites closer to the nuclear plant by the end of March.
