Dr Philip Irwin, head of properties for the Department of Finance and Personnel has been speaking about the certificates which will become compulsory for all house sales from the end of June 2008.
At a seminar for the local building and property profession in Ballymena, he explained how EPCs would impact all new construction from the end of September and all sales and rentals by the end of the year.
Dr Irwin said: “The benefits are twofold. Making improvements will help to reduce Northern Ireland’s carbon footprint.
“With the recent fuel cost increases, buildings that are more energy efficient will also be more attractive to prospective owners.”
The certificates will be similar to those seen on electrical appliances, with a colour coded chart depicting the energy rating.
