According to the Irish Herald, Balbriggan is looking to cut down its oil consumption as part of a global movement to tackle climate change, which may have an impact on businesses in the area.

It would become the second Irish town to take up the scheme, with the first being Kinsale.

The idea is to be presented in a meeting in the town hall next week.

Councillor Steve Kilgallon explained that the scheme would comprise sourcing food locally, investing in eco-friendly transport and increases in recycling.

“Transition towns are basically a concept where a community comes together and plans for a future where there will be less oil,” Mr Kilgallon said.

The news source claims that the idea of Transition Towns came from Professor Rob Hopkins in Kinsale, Cork.

Since then it has been taken up by towns throughout the UK, America, New Zealand and Australia.

The Transition Towns website claims that the scheme was created in response to the “twin challenges” of peak oil and climate change.
