The station is located on Inis Mor and is home to a recycling centre and the capacity to store and provide biofuels in the near future.
Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Eamon O’Cuiv officially opened the station, which is operated by Comharchumann Forbatha Arann Teo and Top Oil, over the weekend.
“We are all aware of the challenges posed by climate change and the need to find more sustainable energy sources and practices,” the minister said.
“I was pleased to fund an electric minibus on Inis Oirr recently and I am delighted to open this facility,” he added.
The facility was built thanks to a grant from the Department of Gaeltacht Affairs and offers green and white diesel, as well as home heating oil, to locals, the Galway News reports.
A port-building project on Inis Mor was also launched over the weekend.
The scheme includes the construction of a 550m breakwater, a new lifeboat station and a covered walkway and facilities for parking.
