Ryan: Interconnection is the way to go

Monday saw the launch of an inquiry into the strategic benefits of a cross-country energy grid supplied by wind energy, according to the Times.

If the scheme is successful it is possible that a Europe-wide grid could be created, an official source told the publication.

“[The grid] will enable us to link into a Europe-wide supergrid for wind energy at a later date, which would make renewable energy a more reliable, flexible resource,” the source said.

Ireland’s energy minister Eamon Ryan has said: “Interconnection is the way forward.”

Renewable energy firm Airtricity, which is reportedly to be involved in the scheme, announced recently that it is to further develop its windfarm opportunities in Portugal in order to provide some 250 megawatts of energy.
