Microgeneration grants withdrawn

Grants for microgeneration in Ireland have been withdrawn as a result of new building regulations, it has been reported.

According to a report in the Herald, it has become compulsory to provide some form of renewable energy in all newly-built homes in the country.

This has meant that grants previously available to those who wish to install solar panels at the properties will have to fund the project entirely if the property is under a year old.

The move will come into effect later this month as part of Sustainable Energy Ireland’s third Greener Homes Scheme.

Green Party councillor Bronwyn Maher said: “I think the best thing people can do when building their own house is to make it as energy-efficient as possible.

“I can see a situation where houses with low energy efficiency are going to be harder to sell.”
