Scott Wilson Charity School Opens In Africa

A brand new primary school for a remote village in Mozambique, which was funded by the Scott Wilson Millennium Project (SWMP) charity and built by staff volunteers at the international consultancy, has officially opened.

The school is only the second in the province of Inhambane to be built to standards set by the Mozambique Ministry of Education. It provides facilities for over 200 children, many of whom will travel up to 10km every day to attend classes. The SWMP raised over £30,000 to pay for construction and equip the school with essential items such as desks, stationery and a library of 200 books. The charity intends to maintain a relationship with the school, providing support over the next five years.

Forty three Scott Wilson volunteers raised funds to travel to Africa and work alongside local labourers to construct the school. Over three months, three groups completed the construction of the school block, comprising two classrooms and administration rooms. The new school provides enhanced educational facilities for children in the remote community, improving their prospects for the future.

Attendees at the official opening included government officials, national media, the children and their families. John Nutt, SWMP Patron and International CEO for Scott Wilson, comments: “The construction of this school has been the most ambitious project undertaken by the charity to date and we are very proud to have been involved in such a successful and rewarding scheme. In the last three months the volunteers have witnessed the outstanding commitment of the staff, children and the Education Authority. We are confident the school is in good hands and look forward to seeing the school and children develop in the coming years.”

To complete the Schools Project, The SWMP partnered with Quest, a specialist company with over eleven years experience in working with community groups and charities on community and conservation projects. They provided in-country project leaders for the volunteers.

Following the successful completion of the school, the SWMP is looking for its next challenge, with plans to utilise the in-house expertise of Scott Wilson’s consultants to help children in need.
