SMEs ‘could save Euro 200m’

Irish small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) could make savings of up to Euro 200m by using Sustainable Energy Ireland's (SEI) assessment services, claims the organisation.

SEI has launched a new awareness project to encourage SMEs to use its free energy assessments service.

It claims that 500 SMEs have already made use of the assessment and identified total savings of more than Euro 25m. In some cases companies discovered they could make savings of 20% or more.

Brian Motherway, head of industry, SEI said: “Coming into the winter months Irish SMEs will be increasingly conscious of their energy costs.

“Energy is becoming central to business competitiveness and the long-term survival of many firms.

“Hundreds of businesses have already acted to tackle energy use and are reaping the rewards.

“As well as the immediate savings, these firms are also preparing themselves for a future where inefficient overdependence on expensive fossil fuels will not be an option.”

The SEI also organises the Sustainable Energy Awards, to be held on November 20.

In the small user category Crown Paints, Westport Woods Hotel & Spa, and Wicklow County Council Housing Section are finalists.
