Green business lobby group established

A cross-border lobby group has been set up to advance the case of green businesses, energy minister Eamon Ryan has announced.

The Sustainable Energy Association (SEA) is to help businesses in the renewable energy sector make their voice heard and ensure operators work to high standards.

Mr Ryan said: “Over 12,000 people are employed directly in the sector here in Ireland, with thousands more indirectly linked, be it in energy assessment, efficient technologies, or in the promotion of energy awareness campaigns countrywide.”

Speaking to a crowd that included representatives from over 40 renewable energy companies, he added that the country had to reach its target set out earlier in the week of venerating 40% of energy from renewable sources by 2020.

An island-wide energy grid was among the projects that he called for, claiming it would help meet the renewables target announced by environment minister John Gormley earlier in the week.

Mr Gormley also announced that emissions last year were down 1% on 2006 levels.
