Summit set for EU climate change issues

Finance and energy ministers are to congregate in Brussels to resolve any outstanding differences in the EU's climate and energy package later this week.

EU environmental ministers attempted last week to reach an agreement in Brussels, but one of the unresolved features focuses around the issue of ‘carbon leakage’ in countries not covered by limits on emissions.

One of the main problems thus far is convincing Poland of the benefits of making power stations by permits for their pollution by 2013.

French president Nicolas Sarkozy recently met central and European leaders in Gdansk to discuss the issue but failed to significantly promote the benefits to reach a full agreement.

Further potential set backs involve Germany and Italy, as the countries fear that by charging power stations for their pollution, they will be limiting their chances of competing in the global market.

Meanwhile, Friends of the Earth recently called on the Irish government to be at the forefront as Europe looks to tackle the climate change problem, the Belfast Telegraph reported over the weekend.
