Northern Ireland Electricity chief switches utilities

Northern Ireland Water (NIW) is set to appoint Northern Ireland Electricity head Laurence MacKenzie as its new Chief Executive, it has been reported.

Mr MacKenzie will take over responsibility for the water and wastewater services provider, replacing former Chief Executive Katherine Bryan.

The move was approved by Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy just weeks after he announced a four-year consultation process that will examine water and wastewater services and their impact on the environment.

“I welcome the fact that a suitable candidate has been found to fill this important position at a critical time in the transformation of the provision of water and sewerage services,” Mr Murphy said.

The new Chief Executive was also welcomed by NIW Chairman Chris Mellor, who had temporarily filled the void created by Ms Bryan’s departure.

He explained that the company was investing millions of pounds to provide the country with high quality water and said that Mr Lawrence was the best person for the challenging role.

However, the Belfast Telegraph recently reported that Northern Ireland’s water system is losing around 157m litres of water every day.
