Government to continue with carbon offsets

Everyone should be reducing and avoiding carbon emissions - but offsetting projects can be a good way of reducing the impact of unavoidable greenhouse gas discharge, the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has said.

The comments come from Minister of State at DECC Joan Ruddock, who added high-quality offsets can help with carbon reduction and provide sustainable opportunities for developing nations.

Yesterday (April 16th), the department announced it is set to continue with its Carbon Offsetting Fund, meaning it will look to neutralise the environmental effects of Government flights.

It is now examining its options for carbon credits and hopes to purchase credits that meet the Clean Development Mechanism Gold Standard.

The new contract, when signed, will apply to all Governmental emissions from April 1st 2009 until March 31st 2012.

In December, world leaders will meet at the United Nations summit on climate change in Copenhagen to discuss a replacement to the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gas emissions.
