Ysgol Y Graig in Llangefni features a green roof, sustainable timber frame structure and on-site wind turbine and pv solar panels which are expected to generate enough electricity to meet around 50% of the school’s needs.

The primary school will sell surplus energy back to the grid at time when demand is low such as weekends and holidays.

It is the first new school to be built on the island since 2002.

Jane Hutt, Welsh Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills, officially opened the new school .

“Building new schools fit for a sustainable future is a top priority for the Welsh Assembly Government – and we all have a role to play in the climate change challenge,” she said.

“Ysgol Y Graig is a shining example of how we can create eco-friendly school facilities which will benefit not only staff and pupils at the school but also the community and the environment for years to come.”

Isle of Anglesey County Council’s education portfolio holder, Cllr Goronwy Parry, said: “This is an important day for the pupils and an opportunity for us to show what has been achieved here at Ysgol y Graig.

“The Council has invested £3.7million in this project which demonstrates our commitment to reducing climate change whilst providing a first class learning environment for the pupils.

“This is the first school to be built on the Island for over seven years, and in Ysgol y Graig I think we have set the standard for future projects not only here on Anglesey but across Wales.”
