Ontario marches towards coal free future

The Canadian province of Ontario is to move closer to its ambition of going completely coal free by 2014 with the closure of four of its remaining plants.

State-owned power company Ontario Power Generation is preparing to close the plants next year.

The closures will mean the province has reduced its coal capacity by 40% since the role out of the plan in 2003.

OPG will continue to assess converting its remaining 11 units to other fuel sources such as biomass.

After 2014 the province’s fuel mix will include nuclear, gas and renewables.

“Ontario is on the edge of creating one of the greenest and cleanest electricity profiles anywhere in the world,” said George Smitherman, Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Infrastructure.

“Delivering on the government’s key commitment to eliminate coal, along with the Green Energy Act, will cement Ontario as a leader in renewable energy and conservation.”
