Sara Svensson has not eaten since November 6 and today said she would not eat anything until a deal was sealed.

Four other activists, aged between 24 and 61, joined Ms Svensson in calling on the world’s leaders to come to an agreement at COP15 and vowed not to eat until they did today (December 8).

Ms Svensson, speaking at the Bella Centre in Copenhagen, said she had not eaten since climate talks in Barcelona and had been joined by people from around the world in order to ‘wake up the world to reality’.

She said: “Today is my 33rd day of a climate justice fast, for over a month I have eaten nothing and been drinking only water.

“It’s certainly not been easy, I get colder, feel weaker and everything requires a lot of self discipline to carry on.

“On the other hand the fast is very empowering, my mind is closed and I’m focused and peaceful amd feel there’s nothing more important I can do with my life.”

Looking thin and at times emotional Miss Svenson said she would end her fast only if leaders agreed a deal in Copenhagen or at least made ‘substantial’ headway.

She added: “We ask world leaders to notice our fast and give the deal we need for survival and give us the political tools we need to transform our world.

“We are ready and we will win.”
