Free paper launches recycling scheme

Problems caused by commuters dumping free newspapers could be ended after a publisher launched a campaign to encourage them to recycle.

Metro, which gives away papers on the London underground and over ground lines as well as around the country, says it will step up its recycling efforts this year.

The firm has joined together with the Britain’s largest train operator, Northern Rail, in a joint initiative to educate readers not to leave their copy of paper on public transport.

The campaign will include on-train posters across the network, encouraging passengers to recycle their newspaper.

These adverts will run until the end of February on more than 300 trains which which serve the north of England.

The posters show a copy of the paper left on the seat of a train featuring the headline ‘HORROR – Woman abandons Metro on train’ along with the slogan ‘Leaving it behind is littering. Please recycle your Metro.’

Distribution and Partners Metro executive director, John Leitch, said: “We hope this latest step in our campaign will remind readers they play an important role in getting their free newspaper recycled.”
