The consultation opened last Friday (February 19) into plans by Viridor for a former quarry called the New England Quarry, between Ivybridge and Plymouth.

Incinerators, often referred to as Energy from Waste (EfW) plants by local authorities, rarely prove popular with residents as Surrey County Council found out when it proposed and then dropped plans for two of them.

The planning application for the Devon plant, which could treat up to 275,000 tonnes of residual waste a year, includes an ash treatment and recycling facility, a landfill for non hazardous waste, a visitor centre, offices, parking, weighbridge and wheel wash and a new access road linking to A38 at Lee Mill.

James McInnes, chair of the council’s development management committee said: “This is a rigorous process designed to ensure people have every opportunity to make their views known, which we will take into consideration when assessing the application.

“We have therefore extended the consultation period and also put in place several ways for comments to be gathered to make it as accessible as possible.”

The public will now have until April 19 to view and comment on the proposal, which can be viewed here.
