FiveBarGate to Review Impact of Renewable Fuels Obligation

Consultants FiveBarGate have been appointed by the Renewable Fuels Agency (RFA) to review the impact of the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) on UK industry.

The assignment will cover the biofuels supply chain including agriculture, obligated companies such as fuel suppliers, and non-obligated companies including biofuels producers. It will cover the costs and benefits of the RTFO, as well as analysing market costs.

Aaron Berry, Head of Carbon and Sustainability at the RFA said: “This review will be key to the annual report which the RFA makes to parliament in January 2011.

“FiveBarGate has a strong team with in-depth knowledge of the sector. We are asking them to get under the skin of the industry, and to deliver findings that enable us to understand what the RTFO is costing, and where it is adding value to the industry.”

Ian Waller, Managing Director of FiveBarGate said: “We are pleased to be appointed to carry out this review, which builds on the work we did last year through AEA Technology. This time we will be looking more closely at bio-energy supply chains and markets, which is an area of particular expertise.”

The work will involve a series of meetings with market participants, as well as a stakeholder workshop, which will take place in London on October 4th.

It is anticipated that the assignment will be completed by the end of October.
