The country will hold a series of events nationally to mark the week which is being coordinated by the EPA.

The EWWR is a 3 year project supported by the Life+ Programme of the European Commission until 2011.

County Clare is one of 21 regions across 10 European countries set to take part in the initiative, which will involve over 2,000 projects aimed at advising members of the public, authorities, businesses and public organizations waste reduction schemes and habits.

Local Authority Prevention Demonstration (LAPD) programme coordinator Pauline McDonogh, RWMO, said: “522kg of municipal waste is generated on average per person in the European Union.

“Household waste also has doubled in weight in 40 years and has been growing steadily at a rate of 1-2%.

“Therefore, raising awareness about waste reduction and promoting changes in production and consumption patterns is more urgent than ever.”

The aim of the events across the week are to raise awareness about waste reduction strategies and about the policies of the European Union and its Member States on this subject and to highlight concrete examples of waste reduction.
