Funded by the Department for Environment Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) the initiative is to run in 20 universities in England.

The Can Film Festival, which takes its name from the world famous Festival de Cannes, is a recycling initiative developed by Every Can Counts and the National Union of Students (NUS).

Students can bring their cans to their NUS areas on campus and swap a certain number for the free tickets.

Every Can Counts spokesman, Rick Hindley, said: “As students consume a large amount of canned drinks, it is important to make out-of-home recycling more convenient and accessible within university campuses.”

To date, there are more than 4000 Every Can Counts collection points across the UK – in offices, shopping centres, hospitals, beaches and music festivals.
