The project is themed to coincide with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the planned woods will be named Diamond woods and Jubilee community woods.
The Trust hopes to involve 10% of the population in creating hundreds of new copses in local areas across the country.
These new trees and woods will be planted from autumn 2011 until the close of 2012.
HRH the Princess Royal is the project’s patron and marked the launch recently by planting a commemorative tree with Woodland Trust President Clive Anderson.
The Woodland Trust’s fundraising manager, Stephanie Henderson, said: “The enormous public support for the recent Forestry Commission sell off consultation has shown that woodland is an issue close to the heart of consumers in the UK.
“We feel the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee offers a fantastic opportunity for businesses to show their customers they also care and support woodland and the UK environment.”
