UK to miss 2020 renewables target

A survey of energy industry leaders has revealed the majority feel the UK will miss its 2020 climate change targets and the Government is to blame.

The UK is committed to cutting emissions by 1990 levels by 2020, but only 38% think these will be met.

And, this might be because due to a lack of government support to help move renewables technology from theory into practice, with 76% of respondents saying the government is not doing enough.

The survey was conducted by Energy & Utilities IQ aimed at assessing the thoughts and concerns of smart utility industry professionals.

Other major concerns of industry professionals are start up costs (16%), lack of government support (6%) and securing internal buy in (5%). It was also stated that convincing the consumers about the value added for them can be a major challenge.

Another part of the survey focused on the security of smart utility technology. For 64% of organisations involved in smart utilities, security was stated as a concern. 39% even consider the security issues as a “serious concern”.

Survey organisers will host the Smart Utility Summit 2011 to discuss the issues further.
