The bid combines mechanical pre-treatment with an energy recovery facility (ERF).

The pre-treatment operation will extract 28,000 tonnes of recyclable ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics and other materials from residual waste arriving at the site.

The remaining 352,000 tonnes of residual waste will be converted into energy via incineration, providing 26MW of electricity to the National Grid.

Hertfordshire County Council’s director of environment & commercial services, John Wood, said: “We’re entering into the last phase of the procurement andlooking forward to working with Veolia to finalise the details of the contract.”
