Shoppers demand better recycling services at the kerbside

Shoppers are more likely to increase the amount of packaging they recycle if councils offer better kerbside collection schemes, according to new research out today (4 July).

Nearly four in ten (37%) shoppers said if all types of recyclable material were collected at kerbside, it would encourage them to recycle more of the packaging they use.

The survey by IGD ShopperTrack also found that 35% want more consistent recycling labelling, 33% would like their council tax based on the amount they recycle and 32% think they should receive some cash back for returning or recycling.

On a positive note, 62% of respondents said they plan to recycle more product packaging and 36% said they would boycott more products with excessive packaging.

IGD’s chief executive, Joanne Denney-Finch, said: “Shoppers trust food and grocery firms to do the right thing when it comes to the environment. More than four-fifths of them say they expect our industry to be using sustainable practices.

“Shoppers are willing to play their part in being more sustainable, but they expect local councils to help them make a difference by extending kerbside collection.”
