Mr. Phil Hogan, T.D. Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, has given Galway City Council approval to prepare contract documents for the Design Build Operate Contract and the 20 year Operation and Maintenance contract.

The existing treatment plant needs an upgrade to deal with the population growth in the surrounding areas and plans will increase its capacity to deal with double the current population.

The project has an estimated cost of Euro 3.6 million and is part of the Department’s investment programme to upgrade wastewater schemes.

Minister Hogan said: “This vitally important project which is being funded under my Department’s Water Services Investment Programme 2010 – 2012.

“The financial support from my Department for this project reflects the commitment for continuing investment in our wastewater schemes to ensure that discharges into our rivers, lakes and coastal water meet the highest international standards.”

Galway City Council will now prepare contract documents for the contract which will be used to seek tenders for the works.
