The Retail Jewellers of Ireland (RJI) have joined forces with WEEE Ireland – the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment compliance scheme – to offer a 20% discount on select watch brands to any customers bringing their old time pieces in for recycling at RJI member stores.
Fronted by one of the emerald isle’s top modelling talents, Nadia Forde, organisers are hoping the scheme will encourage people to have a good rummage through drawers and jewellery boxes for old and broken watches which can be dismantled and reused.
RJI president, Tony Cahill, said: “Our members are already actively involved with the EU WEEE programme but realise that many members of the public are unaware that old watches must not be binned and sent to landfill.
“Through the WEEE recycling initiative, all the metals, glass and resins in unwanted watches and other materials in batteries can be recovered for use again in industry. We are encouraging the public to make the most of this incentive during the month of August.”
WEEE Ireland chief executive, Leo Donovan, added: “WEEE Ireland is delighted to be involved in this innovative recycling scheme with the RJI, not only are we supporting the recycling of old watches but the generous discount offers a great way to support local retailers.”
The discount is available in all RJI stores during the month of August.
