Wessex Water sewerage operative Tom Daly came to the aid of the car driver, by forcing open the car door and pulling her to safety, after he noticed the woman struggling to free herself.

The incident, which took place in June last year, occurred after the vehicle collided with a lorry travelling along the A39 at Chewton Mendip.

As a result of his actions, the driver received only minor injuries, and this week Mr Daly was given a prestigious award from the Royal Humane Society to acknowledge his act of bravery.

Wessex Water chairman Colin Skellett, who presented Tom with the award, said his actions potentially saved the woman’s life.

He said: “Tom risked his own life to rescue the driver and through his selfless actions she escaped without serious injury. His quick-thinking was praised by the emergency services.

“We are all extremely proud of Tom who thoroughly deserves The Royal Humane Society award in recognition of his bravery.”
